White Faced Heron, or White Fronted heron, incorrectly known as the Blue Heron. It’s common around New Zealand and Australia. It is a relatively small heron, pale, slightly bluish-grey, with yellow legs and white facial markings. It can be found almost anywhere near shallow water, fresh or salt, and although it is prompt to depart the scene on long, slow-beating wings if disturbed, it will boldly raid suburban fish ponds. I quietly photographed a pair on the morning of the minus six fog at Anikiwa. they hung around just long enough for me to get about 20 good shots of them.
