La Belle Epoque Carousel

Canon 7D, 10-22mm Lens

Beautiful old double story Carousel in Avignon, France in the main Square.  We were there just as it was getting dark and this was lit up beautifully.  I can't find much information on it, but it is probably late 19th Century.

The Drawbridge and entrance to the Fortress of Carcassonne. Signs of settlement as early as 3600BC has been found, but the fortress was built in the 1130.  It is no a World Heritage Site.  The fortress was considered impregnable and never conquered.  We wandered around for a few hours then drove to Montpellier.

Bush Walk

Canon 7D, 18-55mm (Bush Path), Sigma 120-400mm (Leaf)

I went on a bushwalk today at the Pelorus Bridge, Half way between Blenheim and Nelson, in the South Island of New Zealand. These are two of the photos I took overlaid with each other - the first a shot of a leaf with the sunlight shining through it, and the other the actual path we were walking on. Experimenting was fun and this is what I came up with, which I really like.

Bumbly Bee

Canon 7D, 100mm Macro Lens

There's so many things I love about this image. The detail on the wings of the bee, the fly sitting up on top of the plant, and the spider web leading out of the image.  I only saw the fly and the web when the image came onto my computer - until then I was only concentrating on photographing the bee!

The Capitoline Temple

Canon 7D, 10-22mm Lens

This ancient roman temple is situated in the Ruins of Volubilis, near Meknes, Morocco in North Africa.

The Capitoline Temple was of great importance to civic life as it was dedicated to the three chief divinities of the Roman state, Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. Civic assemblies were held in front of the temple to beseech the aid of the gods or to thank them for successes in major civic undertakings such as fighting wars. The layout of the temple, is somewhat unusual and it has been suggested that it may have been built on top of an existing shrine. An inscription found in 1924 records that it was reconstructed in 218.

The South Island Robin

Canon 20D, 75-300mm Lens

The New Zealand native South Island Robin. They seem quite tame, coming quite close to you, but what they're after are the insects that you are disturbing.  Sparrow sized, and only found in New Zealand.  They are protected.

Mid December when the Lupins are out, make Lake Hawea a stuning place.  All along the beach are these flowers. A small fresh snowfall the night before was gradually disappearing. The lake was an amazing colour.

Lake Hawea

Canon 7D, 18-44mm Lens

Lake Hawea at sunset.  We had had a bit of snow the night before. So it was crisp clear and cold and fresh snow on the top of the ridges. I broke my ankle five minutes before I took this image.  I still managed to walk over, (limp over), and take this photo despite the pain.  Even I am amazed at my resilience!
